Arpoador -- The Harpoon Thrower

View from Arpoador

Arpoador lies at the end of the 4km stretch of beach that is Ipanema and Leblon (towards Copacabana). At Arpoador it's all about the sunset. (well... the surf too) Get yourself a spot on the rocks and sit and watch the beauty unfold. In the area you'll find a number of cafes, street sellers and a general surf / hippy vibe. The rock itself is open to the public, with a number of walkways in place to make it easier to scale the rocks.

Surf

Arpoador is considered one of the best metropolitan surf spots in Rio de Janeiro. The rock outcropping creates stable left breakers up to 7–10 feet high.

Given its metropolitan location, crowds are ferocious and competitive. Given the fact that waves start to break against the rock on a good day, and that a strong rip tide along the promontory creates a quick re-entry, the take-off point is very small.

Top Tips

At a certain point in the summertime it is possible to see the sun setting over the sea from Arpoador, a rare event on the generally eastward-facing Brazilian coast. Crowds gather around the place and cheer when the sun disappears. Canny street sellers will happily make you fresh Caipirinhas as you watch sun fade away - you're never too far from one in Rio.

Be aware - there have been various reports lately of people getting robbed in the area - especially once it's dark, keep an eye on your surroundings and belongings - use common sense. Don't let it put you off as many people go without any problems.
